Why it plays sideways on one device and fine on another
A phone does not turn the picture when you hold it sideways. It records the frames the way the sensor sees them and writes a rotation flag into the file, and the player is supposed to read that flag and turn the picture on the way out. Most do. Some, including a lot of editing software, upload forms and older players, ignore it, which is why the same file looks upright in your camera roll and sideways everywhere else.
Rotating here bakes the rotation into the frames and clears the flag, so there is nothing left for a player to get wrong. That is the difference between this and turning your head: the file itself changes.
If the video is upright but the black bars are on the wrong sides, rotation is not your problem. That is an aspect-ratio mismatch, and cropping or resizing is the fix.

Flip horizontally
| Turn | Use it when |
|---|---|
| 90 degrees clockwise | Portrait footage that plays lying on its left side |
| 90 degrees anticlockwise | Portrait footage that plays lying on its right side |
| 180 degrees | Upside down, usually a phone held the wrong way up or a mounted camera |
| Flip horizontally | Mirrored webcam footage, where text on screen reads backwards |
A quarter turn changes the shape of the video
Turning a video by 90 degrees in either direction swaps its width and height, so the file that comes back is a different shape: a 1920 by 1080 landscape clip becomes 1080 by 1920 portrait, with nothing cropped and no bars added. A half turn and a mirror leave the size exactly as it was.
That swap is often the point. Short-form feeds such as Reels, Shorts and TikTok are built around a 9:16 portrait frame, so footage filmed upright but stored sideways lands on them the right way up and the right shape. If the video needs a different shape rather than a different orientation, cropping or resizing to a set aspect ratio is the tool for that.
Questions about rotate video
Why does my phone video play sideways?
Some players ignore the rotation metadata. Rotating here bakes the correct orientation into the video so it plays right everywhere.
Can I flip / mirror the video?
Yes - choose horizontal or vertical flip in addition to 90° and 180° rotation.
Is it free?
Yes. Rotate and preview free, and a free account downloads the result. Free exports and share pages include a small REQO badge. Go Pro to remove it.
