How to record a Teams meeting

  1. Open the recorder

Two different walls, one answer

Teams recording fails for people in two distinct ways. The first is policy: an administrator decides who may record, and in plenty of organisations that is nobody below a certain level. The button is there, it just refuses. The second is what happens after a successful recording: the file goes to OneDrive or SharePoint under a retention policy, in a place where you can watch it and very little else.

Recording your own screen answers both. It needs no policy exception because you are not using the Teams feature, and the file is yours, in an editor, immediately.

This is also the reason the browser matters. A screen recorder that runs as a tab needs no installer and no admin approval, which is the difference between recording today and filing a ticket.

Say that you are recording

Tell the room you are recording. In two-party-consent places, and in most workplaces, that is a legal requirement rather than a courtesy, and REQO is not the right tool for recording anyone who has not agreed to it.

Turning a recorded meeting into something people watch

The useful artefact from a Teams call is rarely the call. It is the demo someone gave in the middle of it, or the five minutes where the scope changed.

Because the recording opens transcribed, the fastest edit is to cut the transcript down to that section and let the video follow. Add captions, then share a link instead of attaching a file that will bounce off the mailbox limit.

Can I record a Teams meeting if my organisation has disabled it?

You can record your own screen without an admin exception, because it does not use the Teams recording feature. Whether you should is a separate question: check your own workplace policy, and tell the other people in the call.

Do I need to install the Teams desktop app?

No. It does not matter whether you are on the desktop app or the web client, because the recorder captures whatever is on your screen.

Do I need to install anything to record a Teams meeting?

No. The recorder runs in Chrome or Edge, so there is nothing to download and no extension to approve. That is usually the deciding factor on a work laptop you cannot install software on.

Will Teams tell the other people that I am recording?

No. Teams raises its own banner when Teams is doing the recording. A browser recording happens on your machine and is invisible to it, which is exactly why saying so out loud is on you, and why in two-party-consent places it is required.

Can I send it as a link instead of a file?

Yes. Every recording gets a share page, which is usually the difference between it being watched and it bouncing off a mailbox attachment limit.

Where does the recording go?

Into your REQO project, not into SharePoint. You can trim it, caption it, download it as MP4 or share it as a link.
