WAV holds raw uncompressed PCM audio: nothing is thrown away, nothing is guessed on playback. It is the format audio editors and mastering tools want, and it is far too heavy to send around casually.
The practical problem: Around 10 MB per minute, so files get unmanageable quickly. Too large for email attachments or messaging apps.
MP3 solves that. Plays on every phone, car stereo, browser and podcast host in existence. Small enough to attach to an email or send in a chat. Accepted by every transcription and podcast service.
A WAV recording runs about 10 MB per minute, which makes it impossible to email and slow to upload. Converting to MP3 typically shrinks it by ten times or more. Keep the WAV as your master if the audio still has editing ahead of it.
