Common video sizes, and when to use them

The honest rule: downscaling keeps video sharp, upscaling cannot invent detail. Resize down to hit a file-size or platform limit; avoid resizing up unless a platform forces a minimum resolution.

Resize or crop?

Resizing scales the whole frame, nothing is cut off. If you need a different SHAPE (landscape to vertical, widescreen to square), that is a crop: the frame edges have to go somewhere. For a platform switch you usually crop first to the target aspect ratio, then resize to the exact pixel size.

The Crop tool has a ready preset for each platform: 9:16 (1080 x 1920) for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 4:5 (1080 x 1350) for the Instagram feed, 16:9 (1920 x 1080) for YouTube, and 1:1 (1080 x 1080) for Facebook and LinkedIn squares.

Doing it the other way round is where the black bars come from. Resize a widescreen clip to a vertical size and the picture keeps its shape, so the player fills the rest of the frame with nothing, and a platform that checks aspect ratio will either reject it or letterbox it again on top.

Questions about resize video

Can I keep the aspect ratio?

Always. Resizing keeps your video’s shape and only changes how many pixels it has, so nothing is stretched or cut off. To change the shape itself, use Crop.

What resolutions are supported?

4K (2160p), 1440p, 1080p, 720p and 480p. Free exports go up to 1080p; 1440p and 4K are Pro.

Is resizing free?

Yes. Resize and preview free, and a free account downloads the result. Free exports and share pages include a small REQO badge. Go Pro to remove it.

Does resizing a video make the file smaller?

Resizing down does. 1080p has a quarter of the pixels of 4K, and 720p under half of 1080p, so the re-encoded file is usually much smaller. To get under a limit, such as a 25 MB email attachment, use Compress, which pairs a compression level with a lower resolution.

How do I change a video from horizontal to vertical?

That is a crop, not a resize: crop to 9:16 to change the shape of the frame, then resize to 1080 x 1920 if you also need a specific resolution. Our crop tool has the 9:16 preset built in.

Does resizing a video reduce quality?

Downscaling (say 4K to 1080p) keeps video looking sharp and cuts file size. Upscaling cannot invent detail: a 480p video resized to 1080p will look soft.

What size should a video be for Instagram?

1080 x 1920 for Reels and Stories, 1080 x 1350 for portrait feed posts, and 1080 x 1080 for squares. Each of those is a change of shape, so it is a crop: our Crop tool has a preset for every one.
