What 9:16 is, and what it costs
Vertical is a full phone screen turned on its side: nine units across for every sixteen down. It is the shape every full-screen feed uses, and the one a 16:9 recording is furthest from, so the crop is the most aggressive of the four.
Cropping 1920 x 1080 to 9:16 keeps a 608-pixel-wide column out of the middle and throws away roughly two thirds of the frame. That is fine for a talking head and destructive for a screen recording, where the sides usually carry the toolbars and the point. For a screen share, letterbox instead: keep the whole 16:9 frame, centre it on a 1080 x 1920 canvas and use the space above and below for a caption.

How do I turn a landscape video vertical without losing the sides?
Do not crop it. Put the whole 16:9 frame on a 1080 x 1920 canvas and let the bands above and below carry a title or captions. Cropping to 9:16 keeps about a third of the width.
What size is a 9:16 video?
1080 x 1920 is the standard, and what this page sets. 720 x 1280 is the same shape at lower resolution.
Can I choose which part of the frame is kept?
Yes. The crop starts centred and you drag the video inside the new frame, so the subject ends up where you want it rather than wherever the middle happened to be.
