What 4:5 is, and what it costs

Four by five is portrait without being full-screen. It is the tallest shape a feed will show without cropping it back, so it takes more of the screen than a square while still leaving room for the caption and the buttons underneath.

The crop from 16:9 is moderate: 1080 x 1350 keeps a 864-pixel column of a 1920-wide frame. Faces survive it comfortably; wide screen recordings do not.

It is the shape to pick when the video is a feed POST rather than a full-screen story. For full-screen, go to 9:16 instead, and for anything landing in a grid, square.

One practical warning: 4:5 and 9:16 look similar in a thumbnail and behave differently in a feed. A 9:16 post gets letterboxed or cropped back by anything that expects a post rather than a story, so if you are unsure which one the destination wants, 4:5 is the shape that survives both.

What is the difference between 4:5 and 9:16?

4:5 is a tall post; 9:16 is the whole screen. A 4:5 video leaves room for the caption and the buttons under it, which is why feeds prefer it and stories do not.

What size is a 4:5 video?

Can I choose which part of the frame is kept?
