When 1080p is the right export
1080p is the default for a reason: it looks sharp on a phone, a laptop and most TVs, every platform accepts it, and the files stay manageable. If you are not sure what resolution to export, this is the answer.
Downscaling a 4K source to 1080p is one of the few free wins in video: the file gets dramatically smaller and, on any normal screen, the picture does not visibly suffer.

Is 1080p still good enough?
For virtually everything, yes. YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram and every messaging app are consumed on screens where 1080p is indistinguishable from 4K at normal viewing distance.
Will downscaling to 1080p hurt quality?
No. Downscaling keeps the picture sharp and removes data nobody was seeing. It is the upscaling direction that disappoints.
How do I convert a 4K (3840 x 2160) video to 1080p (1920 x 1080)?
