When to flip a video flipped top to bottom
A vertical flip turns the picture top to bottom without reversing left and right. It is the fix for footage from a camera mounted upside down behind glass, and for the inverted output some capture cards and drone gimbals produce.
It is not the same as a 180 degree rotation, and the difference matters. A 180 turns the picture round, so text stays readable when you turn your head; a vertical flip reflects it, so text ends up upside down but not reversed. If the writing in the shot is wrong after you fix the orientation, you applied the other one.
The frame size is unchanged, so a 1920 x 1080 clip stays 1920 x 1080.

What is the difference between flipping vertically and rotating 180 degrees?
A flip reflects the picture, a rotation turns it. On a symmetrical shot they look the same; anywhere there is text or a face they do not. If the result looks mirrored, you wanted the rotation.
Why is my capture card recording upside down?
Some capture devices and mirrored camera mounts deliver the frames inverted. A vertical flip corrects it without touching the frame size.
Will the picture be cropped?
No. Rotating turns the whole frame, so a quarter turn swaps the width and the height rather than cutting anything off. Flips leave the frame exactly as it was.
