Getting a video small enough for Web

On a web page, video weight is page-load time. A hero video that takes six seconds to start is a hero video nobody sees, and it drags your Core Web Vitals down with it.

Aim for the smallest file that still looks right at the size it will be displayed. A background loop shown at 600 pixels wide does not need a 1080p master, and a autoplaying header clip should be measured in single-digit megabytes.

If the video is for a page rather than a person, consider converting to WebM as well: VP9 usually delivers the same picture in less data than H.264.

FAQ

compress for web: questions

How small should a website video be?

Under about 5 MB for anything that autoplays in a hero. Longer embedded videos are better served from a player than as a raw file on the page.

Should I use MP4 or WebM on a web page?

MP4 for maximum compatibility, WebM when you want the smallest file and your audience is on modern browsers. You can produce both here.

Does compression ruin the quality?

At the preset level here, most viewers will not see a difference. Quality only falls apart when you compress hard AND keep a high resolution, which is why this page pairs a level with a resolution.

Is it free?

Yes. Compress and preview for free, then create a free account to download.
