Trimming a MOV and keeping it a MOV

MOV is Apple’s QuickTime container. It is what an iPhone and Final Cut hand you, and it can hold anything from ordinary H.264 to enormous ProRes masters, which is exactly why it travels badly outside the Apple ecosystem.

The output format is set to MOV before you start, so what you download is the same kind of file you uploaded: nothing downstream that expects a MOV has to be told about a new format. If you would rather have something that plays everywhere, switch the output to MP4 in the panel.

Before you trim a MOV

Since iOS 11 an iPhone records HEVC (H.265) by default, and Windows only plays HEVC with an extra extension from the Microsoft Store. Converting to MP4 re-encodes it to H.264, which plays everywhere.

A macOS screen recording (Cmd-Shift-5) is also a MOV, so a clip that plays fine on the Mac that made it can still be refused by a Windows colleague or an upload form.

Will it stay a MOV?

Yes. The output is pre-set to MOV, so the trimmed file downloads as MOV. You can change it to MP4 or another format in the panel before exporting.

Does trimming a MOV lose quality?

The part you keep is re-encoded once at a high quality target, so it is not bit-for-bit identical, but it is indistinguishable at normal playback. Editing the same file over and over will eventually show, so keep your original.

Is trimming MOV free?
