What 1:1 is, and what it costs
Square is the shape that does not care which way the phone is held. It takes the same amount of a portrait screen as a landscape one, which is why it survived as the default for feed video long after the platforms allowed taller posts.
From a 1920 x 1080 source it keeps a 1080-wide column out of 1920 at its original scale, so you lose the outer edges, nothing top or bottom, and nothing is enlarged. That makes it far gentler than a vertical crop and the safest choice when you are not sure where a clip will end up.
It is also the shape to reach for when a video has to sit in a grid next to photographs. A square tile lines up with everything around it; a 16:9 one leaves a gap that the layout has to explain.

Is square still worth using?
Yes, wherever the video sits in a grid or you do not know the destination. It reads the same on a phone held either way, which no other ratio does.
How much of a landscape video is lost?
The outer edges: a 1920-wide frame becomes 1080 wide. Nothing is cut from the top or the bottom.
What if my subject is not in the middle?
This tool crops from the centre, so it keeps the middle of the picture. If the subject sits to one side, open the clip in the full REQO editor, move the picture inside the new frame and export from there. That is free too.
