Getting a video small enough for Slack

Slack takes files up to 1 GB, so a single screen recording rarely bounces. What runs out is the workspace: a free workspace shares 5 GB of storage across everybody in it, and video is the thing that fills it. Compressing before you upload is the difference between a channel that keeps its history and one that starts deleting it.

This page pre-selects strong compression at 720p, which is the right shape for something being watched in a chat window rather than full screen. A three-minute recording typically lands somewhere between 20 and 40 MB.

For anything long, a share link is better than an upload: it costs the workspace nothing, it does not expire when the storage does, and you can tell whether it was watched.

FAQ

compress for slack: questions

What is the file size limit on Slack?

1 GB per file. The limit that bites first is the workspace storage pool: 5 GB in total on the free plan, shared by everyone, and video fills it faster than anything else.

Why does my video look blurry in Slack?

Slack plays the file you uploaded, so blurriness is the compression, not Slack. If the preview looks soft, compress less hard or keep 1080p.

Does compressing affect the audio?

The audio is re-encoded too, at a bitrate that keeps speech clear. Music and anything with wide dynamics is where hard compression is audible.

Is it better to share a link instead?

For anything over a couple of minutes, yes. A link costs the workspace no storage, survives the free plan deleting old files, and shows you whether anyone watched.

Does compression ruin the quality?

At the preset level here, most viewers will not see a difference. Quality only falls apart when you compress hard AND keep a high resolution, which is why this page pairs a level with a resolution.

Is it free?

Yes. Compress and preview for free, then create a free account to download.
