Muting, removing and replacing are three different jobs

Muting a video in a player turns your speakers down. Muting a video file removes the audio from the file itself, so it is silent everywhere, for everybody, including on a platform that autoplays with sound. That is what this does, and it is the one that survives being uploaded somewhere else.

It also makes the file smaller, which is occasionally the real reason people arrive here. Audio is usually a small share of a video file, so expect a few percent rather than a transformation; if size is the goal, compressing the video is the lever that moves.

If the plan is to silence the original and put something else over it, muting first and adding music second gives a cleaner result than layering, because there is no original audio left underneath to duck against or leak through.

Muting to avoid a music claim

The most common reason to strip the sound is a song in the background. Copyright matching on platforms like YouTube compares the audio of an upload against a library of reference tracks, so a file with no audio track has nothing for that comparison to find.

It is not a blanket pass. Matching can also run on the picture, so footage that is itself somebody else's video can still be claimed with the sound removed. And if the video is already on YouTube, its Studio has an Erase song option that removes only the matched music and keeps your voice, which is the better fix when the speech matters.

When the voice does matter and the music is underneath it, removing the whole track takes the speech too. Replace it instead: mute here, then record or add the voiceover and a licensed track in the editor.

FAQ

Questions about mute video

Can I replace the audio instead of just removing it?

Yes - use the Add Music to Video tool to lay a new soundtrack over your footage.

Why mute a video?

Removing background noise, music-rights issues before posting, or preparing footage for a voiceover are the most common reasons.

Is it free?

Yes. Mute and preview free, and a free account downloads the result. Free exports and share pages include a small REQO badge. Go Pro to remove it.
