Merging AVI files into one AVI
AVI is a Microsoft container from 1992. It still turns up in old archives, camcorder dumps and downloaded footage, but it predates modern compression and has no idea what a phone is.
The output format is set to AVI before you start, so what you download is the same kind of file you uploaded: nothing downstream that expects an AVI has to be told about a new format. If you would rather have something that plays everywhere, switch the output to MP4 in the panel.

Before you merge an AVI
No browser plays AVI, so an AVI cannot be previewed or embedded on a web page without converting it first.
AVI files from older cameras and downloads often hold DivX, Xvid or MJPEG video, which modern phones and TVs frequently refuse even when the extension looks familiar.

Will it stay an AVI?
Yes. The output is pre-set to AVI, so the merged file downloads as AVI. You can change it to MP4 or another format in the panel before exporting.
Does merging an AVI lose quality?
The part you keep is re-encoded once at a high quality target, so it is not bit-for-bit identical, but it is indistinguishable at normal playback. Editing the same file over and over will eventually show, so keep your original.
