TikTok video sizes
TikTok is vertical-first: 9:16 at 1080 x 1920 fills the screen edge to edge. Upload a landscape video and it appears as a small letterboxed window in the middle of the feed, which is the fastest way to lose a viewer in the first second.
The interface eats into the frame. The caption, sound name and the button rail sit over the lower and right edges, so keep captions and key detail away from the bottom third and the right-hand strip.
The crop is taken from the centre, which suits an interview framed in the middle. If the part of a screen recording or a widescreen shot that carries the message sits to one side, move the picture inside the 9:16 frame in the full editor rather than shrinking the whole picture into the middle of a vertical canvas.

Cropping is not resizing
Cropping changes what is inside the frame by cutting the edges away. Resizing keeps the whole frame and changes how many pixels it is drawn with. Going from a landscape recording to a vertical post is a crop, and something has to leave the picture.

What is the correct TikTok video size?
1080 x 1920 pixels, 9:16. TikTok accepts other shapes but shows them in a small window instead of full screen.
Can I post a landscape video on TikTok?
You can, but it appears letterboxed and takes up a fraction of the screen. Cropping to 9:16 first is almost always worth it.

Does cropping reduce quality?
The kept part is re-encoded at high quality. What changes how sharp it looks is whether it has to be enlarged to fill the new frame. A 1920 x 1080 recording cropped to 9:16 comes back as a 1080 x 1920 file holding the middle 32% of the width, drawn 1.78 times larger, so it looks a little softer. A 4K original is cut from a strip 1215 pixels wide and is still 1080 x 1920 on the free plan, so nothing is enlarged.
What if my subject is not in the middle?
This tool crops from the centre, so it keeps the middle of the picture. If the subject sits to one side, open the clip in the full REQO editor, move the picture inside the new frame and export from there. That is free too.
