When to rotate a video 90 degrees clockwise
This is the fix for footage that came off a phone sideways. The camera records the sensor’s orientation into a rotation flag rather than turning the pixels, and any player that ignores that flag shows the clip lying on its side. Re-encoding it a quarter turn clockwise bakes the correct orientation into the frames, so it plays upright everywhere.
Clockwise is the one to pick when the top of the picture is currently on the LEFT of the screen. If the top of the picture is on the right, you want the anticlockwise page instead: applying the wrong one leaves you exactly upside down from where you started.
The frame turns with the picture, so a 1920 x 1080 clip becomes 1080 x 1920. That is the intended result, not a crop: nothing is cut off, the shape of the video changes.

Why is my phone video sideways on my computer?
The phone stored a rotation flag rather than rotating the pixels. Apps that read the flag show it upright; ones that ignore it show the raw frames on their side. Rotating here writes the orientation into the frames themselves, so every player agrees.
Does rotating re-encode the video?
Yes. The frames are turned and written out again, which is what makes the fix stick in players that ignore metadata. Quality loss at the default settings is not visible.
Will the picture be cropped?
No. Rotating turns the whole frame, so a quarter turn swaps the width and the height rather than cutting anything off. Flips leave the frame exactly as it was.
