Getting the sound out of MP4
MP4 is the closest thing video has to a universal format: an MPEG-4 container that almost always holds H.264 video and AAC audio, which every browser, phone, TV and social platform can play without a plugin.
The picture is dropped and the audio is written as MP3 (MP3 (lossy)), which every phone, car stereo and podcast host plays. If the MP4 carries several audio tracks, the MP3 carries one of them. Your MP4 itself is not changed.

Before you extract audio from an MP4
An MP4 that plays with no sound usually carries its audio in a codec the player lacks, such as AC-3 from a TV or camera recording. Converting re-encodes the audio to AAC, which everything plays.
YouTube, Instagram and TikTok re-encode every upload, so an MP4 exported at a very high bitrate only makes the upload slower; the viewer never sees the difference.

Can I get WAV instead of MP3?
Yes. Switch the output to WAV in the panel before exporting. WAV is uncompressed, so it is several times larger, and it is what an audio editor would rather have.
Does my MP4 lose anything?
