- Free, no time limit
- Nothing to install
- Editor built in
How to record your screen on Chromebook
Open the recorder
Open REQO in Chrome or Edge on your Chromebook machine and hit record. There is no installer, no extension and no account needed to start.
Pick what to capture
Choose a screen, a single window or a browser tab, and add your webcam and microphone if you want them.
Stop, edit, share
The moment you stop, the recording opens in the editor. Trim it, cut filler words out of the transcript, add captions, then download it or send a link.
ChromeOS records. It does not edit.
ChromeOS has had a decent recorder built in for years. Open Quick Settings and pick Screen capture, or press Ctrl + Shift + Overview (the "show windows" key), switch the toolbar to video, and choose full screen, a region or a window. It saves a WebM to Downloads.
What it does not have is anywhere to go afterwards. A Chromebook has no Premiere, no Final Cut and usually no appetite for a heavy Android video app, so the recording tends to sit in Downloads untrimmed. That is the specific gap a browser editor fills: the machine is already a browser, so a browser-based editor is native to it in a way desktop software never will be.
The other Chromebook-specific win: WebM is what the built-in recorder produces, and plenty of upload forms reject it. A quick convert to MP4 fixes that, and it is free here.

Managed and school Chromebooks
Managed devices usually block extension installs, which rules out most recorder tools before you start. Everything here runs on the page itself, so there is no extension to approve and no admin request to file. The one policy that does stop it is an admin turning screen capture off, and that blocks every recorder in the browser.
For classroom use, the transcript is worth knowing about: it turns a recorded lesson into text you can hand out, and captions can be burned into the video for students watching with the sound off.
Recording on Chromebook: questions
How do I record my screen on a Chromebook?
Open Quick Settings and choose Screen capture, or press Ctrl + Shift + the show-windows key, then switch the toolbar from screenshot to video. For trimming and sharing afterwards, record in REQO instead so the footage lands in an editor.
Can a Chromebook record the screen with audio?
It records your microphone. Capturing what the machine is playing works most reliably when you record a browser tab, since the tab’s audio is part of the share.
Do I need an extension?
No, which matters on managed school and work devices where extension installs are blocked. Everything runs on the page.
How do I convert my Chromebook recording to MP4?
ChromeOS saves WebM, which some upload forms reject. The free WebM to MP4 converter here handles it in about a minute.
Do I need to install anything to record my screen on Chromebook?
No. The recorder runs in Chrome or Edge, so there is nothing to download, no extension to approve and no admin rights to ask IT for.
Is it really free?
Yes. Recording, editing and sharing are free with an account, and there is no time limit on a recording. Free exports carry a small REQO badge; Pro removes it.
Why not just use the ChromeOS Screen capture tool?
the ChromeOS Screen capture tool is fine for capturing raw footage. The gap is everything after: you still have to trim the dead air at the start, cut the bit where you lost your train of thought, and get the file to someone. That is the part REQO does in the same tab.
Can I record my screen and webcam at the same time?
Yes. Capture the screen with your webcam in a corner overlay, and reposition or resize it afterwards in the editor.
How long can I record?
As long as you need. There is no cap on recording length on the free plan.
