How to record an interview

Open the recorder
Open REQO in Chrome or Edge with an interview on screen and press record. Nothing to install, no extension to approve, and no admin rights to ask IT for.
Share the call, with its audio and your mic
Pick the tab the call is running in and include tab audio so the other person is captured, then leave your own microphone on. Two tracks, so a level problem on one side is fixable afterwards.
Take the quote, not the hour
The recording arrives transcribed. Find the answer you wanted by reading rather than scrubbing, cut to it, and send that.

The transcript is most of the point

An interview is recorded so it can be quoted, and quoting from video means scrubbing until you find the sentence. The recording is transcribed as it lands, so the sentence is text you can search, and deleting a passage from that text cuts the video with it.

That is also how a forty-minute conversation becomes the ninety seconds worth sending: find the answer, trim to it, share a link. Nobody watches the hour, including the person who asked for it.

Consent, plainly

Recording another person is a legal question in a lot of places and a trust question everywhere. The browser does not raise a banner in the call the way the meeting platform would, so nothing tells them but you.

Ask at the top, while recording, and let them answer. It costs ten seconds, it is the thing an editor or a legal team will ask for later, and in two-party-consent jurisdictions it is the difference between a recording and an offence.

Two tracks beat one good take

Your microphone is captured separately from the call's audio, which is what makes an interview recoverable: if their connection drops for a sentence, or your side is twice as loud, the two can be balanced rather than re-recorded.

It also means the recording keeps working when the call software does not. A dropped video call is still a recording of everything up to the drop, sitting in the editor.

Recording an interview: questions

Do I have to tell the other person I am recording?

Yes - as a matter of law in two-party-consent places, and as a matter of trust everywhere else. A browser recording is invisible to the call platform, so it raises no banner: saying it is on you.

Does it record both voices?

Yes, if you share the call TAB with its audio. Their side comes through the tab and yours through your microphone, on separate tracks so the levels can be fixed afterwards.

Do I need to install anything to record an interview?

No. The recorder runs in Chrome or Edge, so there is nothing to download and no extension to approve. That is usually the deciding factor on a work laptop you cannot install software on.
