M4A is AAC audio in an MP4 container: what an iPhone Voice Memo, GarageBand export or Apple Music download hands you. It sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, but the extension confuses older hardware and plenty of upload forms.
The practical problem: Older car stereos, media players and some upload forms reject .m4a. ALAC-encoded M4A files are far larger than people expect.
MP3 solves that. Plays on every phone, car stereo, browser and podcast host in existence. Small enough to attach to an email or send in a chat. Accepted by every transcription and podcast service.

M4A to MP3 is a re-encode, so a small amount of detail is lost. At the default quality level the difference is inaudible on speech, and for music it stays well below what typical playback gear reveals.
