FLAC compresses audio losslessly: it typically halves the size of a WAV with every sample recoverable bit for bit. Excellent for archiving, awkward for sending, and unsupported by a lot of consumer playback hardware.
The practical problem: Not supported by many phones, car stereos or upload forms. Still several times larger than an MP3 of the same recording.
WAV solves that. Lossless, so repeated edits and exports never compound compression artefacts. The format audio editors, DAWs and mastering tools expect.
Both are lossless, so this conversion changes the packaging rather than the sound. Do it when a tool refuses FLAC, and expect the file to roughly double in size, since WAV stores what FLAC compresses.
