Why convert M4V to MP4?

M4V is Apple’s flavour of MP4. Technically it is nearly the same file, but the extension trips up upload forms and players, and iTunes-purchased M4Vs may carry DRM.

The practical problem: Upload forms and players reject the .m4v extension even though the contents are MP4-compatible. Some M4V files from the iTunes Store are DRM-protected and will not convert.

MP4 solves that. Plays natively on every phone, browser, TV and editing app with no extra codecs. Every upload form accepts it, from YouTube and LinkedIn to Slack and email. H.264 keeps files small enough to send while still looking sharp at 1080p.

M4V is nearly MP4 already, but the extension is enough to make upload forms and players refuse it. One pass through the converter gives you a plain MP4. DRM-protected M4V files bought from the iTunes Store cannot be converted by any tool.

Does converting M4V to MP4 reduce the quality?

Converting re-encodes the video, so it is not bit-for-bit identical. We encode at a high quality target, which keeps the result visually indistinguishable from the M4V on normal viewing. What changes is the container and the codec. MP4 holds: H.264 video, AAC audio. Converting the same file back and forth repeatedly will eventually show, so keep your original.

How large a file can I convert?
