The container is not the codec, and only one of them is your problem
A video file has two names people use interchangeably and should not. The container is the box: .mp4, .mov, .webm, .mkv, .avi. The codec is how the picture inside it is compressed: H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1. A player can support the box and still refuse the contents, which is why a .mp4 sometimes will not play in a browser that plays every other .mp4 you own.
Converting to MP4 fixes most of it because MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the one combination everything has agreed on for over a decade: every browser, every phone, every upload form, every editor. It is not the highest quality per byte any more, and that is exactly why it is the safest.
The conversion re-encodes rather than repackaging, so the output is a genuinely new file that no longer depends on the codec the original used.
