M2TS is the Blu-ray flavour of the same transport stream MTS uses. It carries high-bitrate H.264 with multi-channel audio, which is why a few minutes of footage can run to gigabytes.
The practical problem: Browsers, phones and social uploads do not accept M2TS. Multi-channel DTS or AC-3 audio confuses consumer editors. Bitrates are far higher than anything you would ever share online.
MP4 solves that. Plays natively on every phone, browser, TV and editing app with no extra codecs. Every upload form accepts it, from YouTube and LinkedIn to Slack and email. H.264 keeps files small enough to send while still looking sharp at 1080p.
M2TS carries Blu-ray-grade bitrates that make no sense outside a disc: gigabytes for a few minutes, with multi-channel audio nothing on a phone can decode. MP4 with H.264 and stereo AAC keeps the picture and drops the weight.

Converting re-encodes the video, so it is not bit-for-bit identical. We encode at a high quality target, which keeps the result visually indistinguishable from the M2TS on normal viewing. Converting the same file back and forth repeatedly will eventually show, so keep your original.
