Captions as a file: SRT, VTT, ASS or TXT
Open the Captions panel, go to the Lines tab and use the menu to export the captions as SRT, VTT, ASS or TXT. A caption file is separate from the video. The platform or player loads it next to the video, and the viewer can switch it off.
It works the other way too. Import an SRT, VTT or ASS file you already have and it becomes the caption track, ready to restyle and burn in. Nothing is transcribed again, so the timings stay exactly as the file had them.
Both samples below are the same two captions, written the way the editor writes them. The difference is small and it matters: SRT puts a comma before the milliseconds, VTT a dot, and VTT starts with a WEBVTT line.

Burned in, or a separate file
Burned-in captions are drawn into every frame of the exported video, in the style you set: font, size, colour, outline, background pill and animation. They show wherever the video plays, including apps where you cannot attach a caption file, and nobody can turn them off. "Burn subtitles" is a switch in the export dialog and it starts switched on.
A caption file keeps the picture clean and leaves the choice to the viewer. Upload the SRT next to the video on YouTube, or give a web player the VTT.
You do not have to pick one. From the same project, export a burned copy for Reels or TikTok and download the SRT for YouTube.
Burned captions are drawn with the fonts the export renderer has installed: Bangers, Bebas Neue, Inter, Luckiest Guy, Montserrat, Open Sans, Oswald, Permanent Marker, Poppins and Roboto.
Captions in other languages
Auto-generate detects the spoken language by itself. If it guesses wrong, set Spoken language to English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Hindi, Arabic or Korean before you generate.
Finished captions can be translated into Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Hindi, Arabic and Korean. Translation spends AI credits. Pro includes 100 a month, and more can be topped up.
Any of those works as a caption file. Burning in works for Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian. Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Hindi, Arabic and Korean use scripts the renderer's fonts cannot draw yet, so export those as an SRT or VTT file instead. The browser preview can look right, because your computer has the fonts, and the burned export would still be wrong.
Dubbing reads the translated captions aloud with an AI voice, adds that voice to the timeline and mutes the original audio of the dubbed clips. Voices exist for Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified) and Hindi, and dubbing spends AI credits as well.
How accurate, and how to fix what it gets wrong
Captions come from Whisper speech recognition with a timestamp on every word, so each caption appears as its words are spoken. The audio decides the accuracy more than anything else: one clear voice close to the microphone transcribes best, and music under speech, people talking over each other and a noisy room cause most mistakes. Names, brand names and jargon are the words most often wrong.
To fix one, open the Lines tab and click the line. Change the text and the timing stays where it was. To fix a name that is wrong every time it appears, use find and replace, then Replace all, with a match-case option. Your edits are saved with the project.
Caption density sets how much text shows at once: Compact, Balanced or Roomy. You can also set the characters per line and the number of lines yourself, and go back to the preset in one click.
No speech in the video, or a script you would rather type? Choose "Type captions manually" and write each line yourself; the same styles apply.
Deleting words in the transcript cuts that footage out of the video, and the captions follow the cut, so tidying the edit and tidying the captions is one job.

The Style tab has 13 presets in 3 groups: Clean (Clean, Broadcast, Editorial, Whisper and Ticker), Bold (Statement, Knockout, Spotlight, Marker and Kinetic) and Loud (Impact, Hormozi and Sticker).
Each preset is a starting point. Change the font, size, colour, outline, shadow, background pill, position and alignment, then turn on an animation: Highlight, Karaoke, Pill, Pop or Reveal. The animation follows each word as it is spoken, and the export matches the preview.
What is free and what Pro adds
Auto captions need a free account. Without one you can open the editor and upload, and the Captions panel asks you to sign in when it is time to transcribe.
Free exports and share pages include a small REQO badge. Go Pro to remove it.

How do I add subtitles to a video for free?

How accurate are the auto-generated subtitles?

Can I import an SRT file I already have?
Yes. In the Captions panel choose "Upload subtitles file" and pick an SRT, VTT or ASS file. It becomes the caption track with its own timings, and you can restyle it and burn it in like generated captions.
Which languages can be burned into the video?
Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian, plus English. Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Hindi, Arabic and Korean captions can be translated and exported as an SRT or VTT file, but not burned in yet.
