This conversion is lossy, and it is worth being clear about it
Advanced SubStation Alpha carries an entire presentation layer: named styles, fonts, colours, outlines, positioning, rotation, and the override tags that produce karaoke timing and on-screen effects. SubRip carries none of it.
So converting ASS to SRT keeps the words and the timings and discards everything about how they looked. For a normal dialogue track that is exactly what you want, because the destination is usually a platform that would have ignored the styling anyway.
For a file where the styling is the point, typesetting that labels signs in a scene, karaoke, or captions positioned to avoid burned-in text, converting to SubRip destroys the work. Burning the ASS file into the video keeps the appearance permanently instead.

What the SRT file holds
Each Dialogue line in the ASS file becomes one numbered cue in the SRT, with the same start and end. ASS counts in hundredths of a second and SRT in thousandths, so 0:01:02.45 is written as 00:01:02,450 and nothing is rounded.
The text is the words only. Override blocks in braces, such as {\i1} or {\pos(640,60)}, are taken out, a \N break becomes a real second line and a \h hard space becomes an ordinary space. Vector drawings, Comment lines and actor names are left out.
Cues are written in the order they start. A sign that is on screen while somebody speaks comes out as its own cue between the lines of dialogue, because nothing in an ASS file marks it as scenery rather than speech.
ASS and SRT, side by side
The text and the timings carry over exactly. What cannot come with them is anything Advanced SubStation Alpha can express and SubRip cannot: positioning, alignment and per-cue styling have nowhere to go, so they are dropped rather than approximated.
Both samples below hold the same two cues, so the difference you can see is the whole difference between the formats.

How do I convert ASS to SRT?

Does converting ASS to SRT lose the styling?
Yes, all of it. Fonts, colours, outlines, positioning and any karaoke or effect tags are discarded, because SubRip has no way to express them. The text and timings are kept exactly.
How do I keep the look of my ASS subtitles?
Burn them into the video. Rendering the captions into the frames keeps the appearance you designed, and the result plays anywhere without a subtitle file at all.
Do I need Aegisub or ffmpeg to convert ASS to SRT?
No. Both can do it, and both have to be installed first. This page reads the .ass file in your browser and writes the .srt, on any computer.
Why would I want to lose the styling?
Because most places will not read it. Platform upload forms, desktop editors and broadcast tools take SubRip; an ASS file is either rejected or has its styling ignored anyway, and a clean SRT is more predictable than a half-honoured ASS.
Do the effects and karaoke tags come through?
No. Override tags, karaoke timing and vector drawings have no SubRip equivalent, so they are removed rather than left in the text as visible junk. Only the words of each line come through.
