Record a Discord Call or Stream

Discord has no recording feature at all, so the only way to keep a call or a stream is to record your own screen.

How it works

How to record a Discord call

  1. Open the recorder

Open REQO in Chrome or Edge and press record. Nothing to install, no extension to approve, and no admin rights to ask IT for.

  2. Share the Discord window, with audio on

Add your microphone so your own voice is on the track, and your webcam if you want to be in the corner of the frame.

  3. Cut it to a clip

Trim to the moment worth keeping, then export an MP4 or a GIF. For a bug report a GIF is usually the better answer, because it plays inline with no player.

Discord does not record, and never has

Unlike Zoom, Meet and Teams, Discord ships no recording feature whatsoever. There is no button that is greyed out and no plan that unlocks one. Every guide you find is describing either a bot that joins the voice channel or a screen recorder, and bots come with their own consent and server-permission problems.

Recording your own screen is the direct route. Whether it is a voice call, someone screen sharing a game, or a stage channel, it is on your display, so it can be captured as a window or a tab.

To get the other voices, capture the audio Discord is playing rather than relying on your microphone alone. Sharing the Discord window or tab with audio enabled is what puts their voices on the track alongside yours.

Say that you are recording

Tell the room you are recording. In two-party-consent places, and in most workplaces, that is a legal requirement rather than a courtesy, and REQO is not the right tool for recording anyone who has not agreed to it.

Clips, not archives

Most Discord recordings exist to become a clip: the bug someone reproduced, the moment worth sharing, the bit of the session you want in a highlight.

The editor is where that happens. Trim to the section, cut it down further by editing the transcript, and export an MP4 or a GIF depending on where it is going. A GIF is often the right answer for a bug report.

FAQ

Recording a Discord call: questions

Does Discord have a built-in recorder?

No. Discord has never shipped call recording. The options are a bot in the voice channel or recording your own screen, and the second one needs no server permissions.

How do I record Discord audio as well as video?

Share the Discord window or tab with audio enabled so the voices Discord is playing are captured, and leave your microphone on for your own side.

Do I need to install anything to record a Discord call?

No. The recorder runs in Chrome or Edge, so there is nothing to download and no extension to approve. That is usually the deciding factor on a work laptop you cannot install software on.

Is there a time limit?

No. Recording is free with an account and there is no cap on how long a recording runs. Free exports carry a small REQO badge; Pro removes it.

Can I export a Discord clip as a GIF?

Yes. Trim to the section you want and export it as a GIF, which is usually the right format for a bug report or a chat message.
