How to record a Google Meet call

  1. Open the recorder

    Open REQO in Chrome or Edge with a Google Meet call on screen and press record. Nothing to install, no extension to approve, and no admin rights to ask IT for.

  2. Share the Meet tab, with tab audio on

    Choose the tab rather than the whole screen. It keeps your notifications and desktop out of the frame, and it is the option that lets Chrome capture the meeting audio.

  3. Stop, cut, share

    The recording opens in the editor the moment you stop. Trim the joining-and-waiting at the front, delete a sentence by deleting it from the transcript, add captions, then download it or send a link.

Meet recording is a paid feature, and that is the whole problem

Recording in Google Meet is gated behind the paid Workspace tiers. On a free Google account the option is simply not in the menu, and on a paid plan it is still the administrator who decides whether you personally get it. There is no trick that unlocks it from the participant side.

Recording the browser tab sidesteps the tier question entirely, because you are not asking Meet for anything. Meet runs in a tab, and a browser recorder captures tabs. It behaves identically on a free account, a work account, and an account where an admin has turned the feature off.

Pick the tab rather than the whole screen when you record. It keeps your notifications, your other windows and your desktop out of the frame, and it is the option that lets Chrome capture the meeting audio along with the picture.

Say that you are recording

Tell the room you are recording. In two-party-consent places, and in most workplaces, that is a legal requirement rather than a courtesy, and REQO is not the right tool for recording anyone who has not agreed to it.

What you get afterwards

The recording lands in an editor rather than a downloads folder, which matters more than it sounds. A raw 50-minute call is not a thing anyone will watch, and the work of turning it into something useful is trimming, not re-recording.

Cut it by editing the transcript, add captions so it survives being watched on mute, and share a link. If you only need the decision, clip the two minutes around it and send that instead.

Recording a Google Meet call: questions

Can I record a Google Meet on a free account?

Not with Meet's own recording, which is a paid Workspace feature. Recording your own browser tab works on any account, because it does not involve Meet's recording at all.

How do I capture what the other people are saying?

Choose the Meet tab in the share picker and leave tab audio enabled. Chrome then captures the meeting audio; your microphone captures you.

Do I need to install anything to record a Google Meet call?

No. The recorder runs in Chrome or Edge, so there is nothing to download and no extension to approve. That is usually the deciding factor on a work laptop you cannot install software on.

What resolution does it record at?

It records what your screen is showing, up to 1080p, and you can pick a single window or tab rather than the whole display so nothing else ends up in the frame.

Will Meet tell the other people that I am recording?

No. Meet raises its own banner when Meet is doing the recording. A browser recording happens on your machine and is invisible to it, which is exactly why saying so out loud is on you, and why in two-party-consent places it is required.
