Why convert MP4 to GIF?

MP4 is the closest thing video has to a universal format: an MPEG-4 container that almost always holds H.264 video and AAC audio, which every browser, phone, TV and social platform can play without a plugin.

The practical problem: MP4 is already the safest format, so the usual reason to convert away from it is a specific destination that wants something else.

GIF solves that. Auto-plays and loops in email, docs, issue trackers and chat apps where video is blocked. Needs no player, no controls and no click to start.

The thing to get right here is length. A GIF stores every frame as an indexed image with no interframe compression, so a 30 second clip can produce a file many times larger than the MP4 it came from. Trim to the two or three seconds that actually matter first, and the GIF stays small enough to drop into an email, a README or a ticket.

FAQ

MP4 to GIF questions

Is the MP4 to GIF converter free?

Yes. Convert and preview the result for free, then create a free account to download it. There is no per-file charge and no watermark on the GIF itself beyond the free-plan badge.

Do I need to install any software?

No. The conversion runs on our servers and the whole flow happens in your browser, so it works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android.

Does converting MP4 to GIF reduce the quality?

Visibly, yes. GIF is limited to 256 colours, so gradients and camera footage band. It is the right format for short UI loops and reaction clips, not for anything you want to look sharp.

How large a file can I convert?

Up to 500 MB per file. For anything bigger, trim or compress it first, both are free tools here.

Is my file kept private?

Your upload is processed and then held only as long as your project needs it. Nothing is published, indexed or shared unless you create a share link yourself.

Why is my GIF bigger than the original MP4?

Because GIF barely compresses. MP4 stores the difference between frames; GIF stores whole frames. That is the trade you make for a file that auto-plays in email and issue trackers.

Does the GIF keep my audio?

No. GIF has no audio track at all. If sound matters, keep the MP4 and share a link instead.

How long should a GIF be?

Under about five seconds for anything you plan to email or embed. Trim the clip first, then convert.
