Why convert M4A to AAC?
M4A is AAC audio in an MP4 container: what an iPhone Voice Memo, GarageBand export or Apple Music download hands you. It sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, but the extension confuses older hardware and plenty of upload forms.
The practical problem: Older car stereos, media players and some upload forms reject .m4a. ALAC-encoded M4A files are far larger than people expect.
AAC solves that. Efficient modern codec, standard inside MP4 and streaming.

Does converting M4A to AAC reduce the quality?
M4A to AAC is a re-encode, so a small amount of detail is lost. At the default quality level the difference is inaudible on speech, and for music it stays well below what typical playback gear reveals.
How large a file can I convert?
Anything under 1GB per upload, which is more footage in some formats than others. M4A: Slightly smaller than MP3 at the same quality. AAC coming back: Similar to MP3, slightly better quality. For anything bigger, trim or compress it first, both are free tools here.
