AAC is the codec inside almost every MP4. As a bare .aac stream it lacks the container metadata players rely on, which is why seeking and duration often misbehave until it is wrapped or converted.
The practical problem: Raw AAC streams frequently show the wrong duration or refuse to seek. Fewer players and podcast hosts accept a bare .aac file than an MP3.
