Convert MPEG to GIF

Turn your MPEG file into a GIF that plays where you need it, right in your browser.

  • Free to start
  • In your browser
  • Up to 1GB
How it works

How to convert MPEG to GIF

  1. Upload your MPEG file

Drag and drop a MPEG file to turn into GIF, or click to browse. Anything under 1GB, and nothing is installed.

  2. Confirm GIF as the output

GIF is already selected, so there is nothing to configure. Switch to another format in the panel if MPEG needs to go somewhere else.

  3. Convert and download

We convert the MPEG on our servers, usually in under a minute. Create a free account to download the GIF, or keep editing it in REQO.

Why convert MPEG to GIF?

MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files are what DVDs, tape camcorders and broadcast capture cards produced. The compression is decades old, so the files are huge relative to how good they look.

The practical problem: Phones and browsers cannot play MPEG program streams. MPEG-2 uses several times the bitrate H.264 needs for the same picture. Interlaced footage from tape looks combed on modern screens until it is re-encoded.

GIF solves that. Auto-plays and loops in email, docs, issue trackers and chat apps where video is blocked. Needs no player, no controls and no click to start.

FAQ

MPEG to GIF questions

Is the MPEG to GIF converter free?

Yes. Convert and preview the result for free, then create a free account to download it. There is no per-file charge and no watermark on the GIF itself beyond the free-plan badge.

Do I need to install any software?

No. The conversion runs on our servers and the whole flow happens in your browser, so it works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone and Android. Nothing to install at either end. Where MPEG plays: Desktop players; not phones or browsers. Where the GIF you get back plays: Everywhere an image can be shown.

Does converting MPEG to GIF reduce the quality?

Visibly, yes. GIF is limited to 256 colours, so gradients and camera footage from the MPEG will band. It is the right format for short UI loops and reaction clips, not for anything you want to look sharp.

How large a file can I convert?

Anything under 1GB per upload, which is more footage in some formats than others. MPEG: Very large for the picture quality. GIF coming back: Huge for anything over a few seconds. For anything bigger, trim or compress it first, both are free tools here.

Is my file kept private?

Your upload is processed and then held only as long as your project needs it. Nothing is published, indexed or shared unless you create a share link yourself.
