How small do you need it?
Compression is a trade you control: the smaller the target, the more the encoder has to throw away. Pick the target based on where the video is going, not on a percentage.
The panel has two settings. The level is one of 3: Light (no visible change), Balanced (much smaller, still sharp), Strong (smallest, softer detail). The resolution is Source, 1080p, 720p or 480p. When you need a MUCH smaller file, lower the resolution as well: 720p at a healthy bitrate looks better than 1080p at a starved one.
The last column is exactly what each destination’s preset page opens with, so the preset and this table never disagree.

Questions about compress video
How much smaller will my file get?
It depends on how the file was made, so the panel asks for a level rather than a percentage. Light (no visible change), Balanced (much smaller, still sharp), Strong (smallest, softer detail). For the smallest file, pick Strong and drop the resolution to 720p or 480p as well: fewer pixels save more than a harder level at full size.
Does compression hurt quality?
We use a quality-targeted encode, so at the Light and Balanced levels most viewers won’t notice a difference. Strong trades some fine detail for the smallest file.

How do I compress a video for email?
Most email providers cap attachments at 25 MB. Pick Strong and 720p in the panel, which is what the email preset opens with. If the result is still over the cap, trim the video or share a link instead of an attachment.
How do I make a video smaller without losing quality?
Re-encoding with a modern codec at a quality-targeted bitrate removes size the original encoder wasted. For big reductions, dropping resolution from 1080p to 720p usually looks better than starving the bitrate at full resolution.
Why is my screen recording so large?
Screen recorders prioritize speed over efficiency while capturing, so their files carry far more bitrate than the content needs. A single compression pass often halves them with no visible change.
