When 1440p is the right export
1440p, or QHD, is the size that sits between 1080p and 4K: 2560 x 1440, exactly twice the pixels of 1080p and just over half of 4K. It is the native resolution of a lot of 27-inch monitors, which is why screen recordings so often arrive at this size in the first place.
It is also the point where YouTube changes how it treats a video. Uploads at 1440p and above are encoded with a noticeably higher bitrate than 1080p ones, so a 1440p export can look cleaner on YouTube than a 1080p export of the same footage, even to somebody watching in a 1080p window.
Everywhere else, it is a size to downscale from rather than to. Nothing outside YouTube gives 1440p a better encode, and every extra pixel is bytes for a screen that is not going to show them.

Is 1440p better than 1080p?
On a screen big enough to show it, yes: twice the pixels. On a phone or in a 1080p window the difference is invisible, and the file is roughly twice the size either way.
Why does 1440p look better on YouTube?
Not because of the pixels. YouTube gives 1440p and above a higher bitrate than 1080p, so less detail is thrown away in their encode. That difference survives even when the viewer is watching smaller.
Should I upscale 1080p footage to 1440p for YouTube?
Some people do, precisely for the bitrate. It is a trade: the picture gains nothing on its own, and you pay in file size and upload time for a better encode of the same detail.
Will 1440p play everywhere?
Yes. It is an ordinary MP4; anything that plays a video plays it. What varies is whether the destination keeps the resolution or re-encodes it down.
Does the aspect ratio change?
No. The source aspect ratio is preserved, so nothing is stretched or cut. To change the shape of the frame, use the crop tool instead.
