What 16:9 is, and what it costs
Widescreen is what almost everything is already: cameras, screen recorders, phones held sideways, every desktop display. Cropping TO 16:9 is therefore usually about getting back to it, from footage shot vertically or from a square export somebody else made.
Going from vertical to widescreen is the harshest crop of the four, because it takes a wide strip out of a tall frame and discards the rest. If the subject moves up and down at all, letterboxing is the better answer: keep the whole frame and put it on a 1920 x 1080 canvas with the sides filled.
It is also the only shape a television, a projector or a conference call will show without bars of its own, which is why anything meant for a screen rather than a feed ends here.

How do I make a vertical video landscape?
You can crop a wide strip out of it, which loses the top and bottom, or letterbox it onto a 1920 x 1080 canvas so the whole frame survives with filled sides. For anything where the subject moves, letterbox.
What size is a 16:9 video?
1920 x 1080 for HD, 3840 x 2160 for 4K. Both are the same shape; this page sets the frame, not the resolution.
Can I choose which part of the frame is kept?
Yes. The crop starts centred and you drag the video inside the new frame, so the subject ends up where you want it rather than wherever the middle happened to be.
