Getting a video small enough for Teams
Microsoft Teams caps a file dropped into a chat at 250 MB, which a screen recording passes in about two minutes at full quality. Larger files have to go through SharePoint or OneDrive, which works but takes the video out of the conversation it belonged to.
Compressing to 720p keeps it in the chat, where the person you sent it to will actually see it. This page pre-selects the settings for that: strong compression, 720p, which puts a five-minute recording comfortably under the cap.
The other reason to compress is the audience. Teams video is watched in a panel beside other things, on a work laptop, often at half attention. Sharpness past 720p is not what makes it get watched.

What is the file size limit in Teams?
250 MB for a file attached to a chat or channel message. Anything larger goes through SharePoint or OneDrive, which is a link rather than a file in the conversation.
Why will Teams not let me send my recording?
Almost always the 250 MB cap. A full-quality screen recording reaches it in roughly two minutes; compressing to 720p buys about five times the length.
Does Teams compress the video again?
It re-encodes for playback in the client, so a file that is already heavily compressed can look worse than you expect. Start from the highest-quality source you have rather than compressing something twice.
Should I use Stream instead?
For a recording the whole company should keep, yes. For something one person needs to watch today, a file in the chat is one click and Stream is three.
Does compression ruin the quality?
At the preset level here, most viewers will not see a difference. Quality only falls apart when you compress hard AND keep a high resolution, which is why this page pairs a level with a resolution.
