What a crossfade does to the picture and the sound

A crossfade, also called a dissolve or a fade transition, plays the end of one clip and the start of the next at the same time. Half way through, each is at half strength: the frame is an even mix of the two pictures. By the end the first clip has gone and only the second is left. Nothing passes through black on the way, which is the difference between this and a fade to black.

The sound does the same thing on the same clock. The first clip's audio falls in a straight line as the second's rises, so speech or music under the join overlaps for a moment rather than stopping dead. If one of the clips has no sound, that side of the fade is silence.

Length changes what it means. A quarter of a second softens a cut without being noticed as an effect. Half a second, which is what this page starts on, reads as a clear change of shot. A full second is slow enough to suggest time passing. Whatever you choose, the merged video is shorter than the two clips added together by that amount, because they share the screen for it.

FAQ

Crossfade Videos: questions

Is a crossfade the same as a fade transition or a dissolve?

Yes. Crossfade, cross dissolve, dissolve and fade transition all name the same thing: one clip fading out while the next fades in over it. A fade to black is different, because the picture goes to black in between; that has its own page.

How long should a crossfade be?

Pick 0.25, 0.5 or 1 seconds. Half a second suits most joins. The limit is half the length of the shorter clip, so the transition never uses up a whole clip.

Can I crossfade more than two clips?

Yes. Add as many clips as you need and every join gets the same crossfade. They play in the order you add them.

Is crossfading videos free?

Yes. Crossfade the clips and preview free, and a free account downloads the result. Free exports and share pages include a small REQO badge. Go Pro to remove it.
