Crossfade is already selected
The transition is pre-set at 0.5 seconds and goes on every join. Choose 0.25, 0.5 or 1 seconds, or another transition, in the panel.

Which transition to put between two clips
A transition is what happens at the join between two clips. With none, the first clip ends on one frame and the next begins on the following one: a straight cut, which is what most edits use most of the time. A transition spends a short stretch of both clips on getting from one to the other instead, so the two overlap, and the finished video is shorter than the clips added up by the length of each transition.
Three are offered here, and each one says something different about the two shots it joins.
The sound is treated the same way whichever you pick: across the transition the first clip's audio fades down as the next one's fades up, so the level does not jump at the join. The length is your choice of 0.25, 0.5 or 1 seconds. One rule limits it: a transition can be at most half as long as the shorter of the two clips it joins, so a one second clip takes half a second at most.

Fade to black
Wipe
| Transition | What you see | What it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Crossfade | The first clip fades out while the next fades in over it | Two shots of the same scene, a change of place, a softer join than a cut |
| Fade to black | The first clip drops to black, then the next comes up out of it | The end of one section and the start of another, or time passing |
| Wipe | The next clip sweeps across the frame from the right and covers the first | A deliberate change of subject: a before and after, the next step of a tutorial |
Add Transitions to Video: questions
How do I add a transition between two videos?
Upload the first clip, add the second with Add another video, then pick Crossfade, Fade to black or Wipe under Transition and choose its length. The same transition goes on every join, and the clips play in the order you added them.
Does a transition make the video shorter?
By its own length at each join, because the two clips overlap while it plays. Two 10 second clips with a 1 second crossfade make a 19 second video. Nothing is cut out: the end of the first clip and the start of the second are both on screen during the overlap.
Can I use a different transition at each join?
Not here: one choice applies to every join in the merge. In the full REQO editor, which is free, each clip takes its own transition and length, and there are slides and wipes in four directions as well.
Is adding transitions free?
Yes. Add the transition and preview free, and a free account downloads the result. Free exports and share pages include a small REQO badge. Go Pro to remove it.
