How it works

  3. Convert and download

Create a free account to download it.

When 60fps is the right frame rate

60 frames a second makes motion look smooth rather than filmic: gameplay, sport, fast screen scrolling and product demos with a lot of cursor movement all read better.

Converting a 30fps source up to 60 does not invent new motion. Frames are repeated, so it only looks smoother when the original was shot at a high frame rate.

What changes when a video becomes 60fps

A 60fps file shows 3,600 pictures a minute. To get there, frames are dropped or shown again on the same timeline. Nothing is blended and no in-between frame is invented: each picture of your video comes from one of its own frames.

From a 30fps clip, every frame is shown twice. From a 24fps clip, every frame is shown 2 or 3 times. The video does not play faster or slower either way, and the sound keeps its own speed, so speech stays in step with the picture.

On a free account the file comes back at 30fps, the free ceiling: a 30fps upload keeps its frames as they are, and from a 60fps upload 1 of every 2 frames is dropped. The download is an MP4 with H.264 video at the size your video already has, up to 1080p on a free account.

FAQ

Convert to 60fps: questions

Does 60fps make the file bigger?

Yes. There are twice as many frames as 30fps to encode, so at the same quality setting the file is larger.

Is converting to 60fps free?

60fps is a Pro export. Free exports go up to 30fps, so on a free account the file comes back at 30fps. For a single file, a one-off $2 payment gets it at 60fps with no badge and no subscription.

Does 60fps make the video play faster or slower?

No. Frames are dropped or shown again on the same timeline, so the video plays at the speed it always did and the sound stays in sync. To make a clip play faster or slower, use the speed tool instead.

Can I get a frame rate that is not listed here?

This page is set to 60fps, and there are pages for 24fps and 30fps. For anything else, open the clip in the full REQO editor: its export dialog offers 24, 25, 30 and 60 frames a second under Advanced, and anything above 30 is a Pro export.
