How it works

Extract Audio from Video in 3 steps

  1. Upload your video

Drag and drop a video file, or click to browse.

  2. Pick a format

Choose MP3 (smaller) or WAV (lossless) for the extracted audio.

  3. Extract & download

Sign up to download the audio file.

Which audio format you want depends on what happens next

The choice is between a file that stays small and a file that stays intact. MP3 throws away detail you are unlikely to hear and lands around a tenth of the size; WAV keeps every sample and is the one to hand to anything that will process the audio again. For speech that is going to a person, MP3 is almost always right. For speech that is going to a transcription model or another round of editing, WAV avoids compressing something twice.

One thing worth knowing before you extract: the audio in a video file is already compressed, usually as AAC. Extracting to MP3 compresses it a second time, which is fine for listening and slightly lossy for anything else. Extracting to WAV does not add a second pass, but it cannot undo the first one either.

If what you actually want is the words rather than the sound, transcribing the video skips this step entirely.

When the extracted audio is silent

A silent result almost always means the video never had sound in it, rather than that the extraction failed. The usual reasons are few and easy to check.

Screen recordings only carry sound if it was shared when the recording started. In Chrome the screen picker has a switch for sharing tab or system audio, and a recording made with it off has no audio track at all, however loud the video was on screen.

Some files were exported without sound on purpose: a muted clip, a GIF turned into a video, a silent loop. Their audio track is either missing or genuinely empty.

And some recorders, OBS and many cameras among them, write more than one audio track, for example the microphone on one and the system sound on another. If the part you wanted is on a track other than the one that was extracted, re-export from the recorder with the tracks mixed together.

FAQ

Questions about extract audio from video

What format is the extracted audio?

You choose: MP3 for a small file that plays anywhere, or WAV for an uncompressed copy.

Can I extract audio from any video?

Any common video file works, including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and AVI, as long as it has an audio track. The whole track comes out, from the first second to the last.

How do I extract the MP3 from an MP4?

Upload the MP4, leave the format on MP3 and press Extract Audio. The AAC track inside the MP4 is written out as an MP3 file.

Can it separate the voice from the music?

No. This tool saves the audio track exactly as it was mixed, so speech and background music come out together. It does not isolate a voice or remove the music.

Is it free?

Yes. Extract and preview free, and a free account downloads the result. Free exports and share pages include a small REQO badge. Go Pro to remove it.
